  • Date & Time: April 18th, 6:30 pm
  • Location: AFNO, 1519 Jackson Avenue
  • Duration: 45-minute talk followed by a 15-minute discussion

Amel Tafsout's talk delves into the profound violations of boundaries within Algerian society, especially within private spaces, as depicted in countless colonial-era postcards. Drawing from Alloula's pivotal work, "The Colonial Harem," Tafsout unveils the layers of cultural appropriation, racism, and Eastern exoticism inherent in these images.

Since 1830, France's presence in Algeria burgeoned, intertwining capitalist interests with tourism. This era birthed the prolific production of Neurdein Frères' ND images, catering to the burgeoning tourism industry while encapsulating colonial infrastructures. Photographers, dispatched to Algeria, captured images later developed and sold to French tourists, perpetuating stereotypes through postcards that objectified Algerian women.

Photographers like Jean Geyser commercialized images of nameless or stereotyped "beautiful Fatma," reinforcing racial and gender biases. These postcards, often depicting scantily clad women, blatantly trespassed cultural and religious sanctities, transgressing the boundaries of privacy and respect.

Amel Tafsout's discourse not only unveils historical truths but also prompts critical reflections on the intersection of race, work, and gender perpetuated by these postcards. Join us for an eye-opening discussion shedding light on this often overlooked aspect of colonial history.
