Ciné-Club en plein air : Le Sapeur + Francophone Shorts

The next Ciné-Club en plein air will be March 19 at 7:00 pm and will be part of or "Semaine de la Francophonie." The event will take place in the AFNO backyard, and space is limited in order to maintaint proper social distancing, so register in advance! We will be screening multipe short films from around the Francophone world as well as the documentary "Les Sapeurs."

"Les Sapeurs" Synopsis: 
“La SAPE” was born in Congo-Brazzaville during colonization. In the 1970s, the “sappers” used their weapons, clothing, to invest the social space by appropriating the codes of the elite. They proclaim their existence in the face of politicians intoxicated with their new powers. The acronym SAPE stands for the Society of Ambiances and Elegant People, a clothing fashion that became popular in the "two Congos" (Brazzaville and Kinshasa) around the 1960s - a period known as "Independence". In the 1970s, some pioneers of the SAPE emigrated to Paris, a fashion capitol. This is the case of Jocelyn Le Bachelor, who offers Parisians bold suits.

Ils clament leur existence à la face des hommes politiques enivrés de leurs nouveaux pouvoirs. L’acronyme SAPE désigne la Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elégantes, une mode vestimentaire qui s’est popularisée aux « deux Congo » (Brazzaville et Kinshasa) autour des années 1960 – période dite des « Indépendances ». Dans les années 1970, certains pionniers de la Sape émigrent à Paris, vitrine de la mode. C'est le cas de Jocelyn Le Bachelor, qui propose aux Parisiens des costumes audacieux.
