Part of la Semaine de la Francophonie, our third Rendez-vous de l'Alliance will be with professor and researcher Ross Louis, Professor of Performance Studies, Xavier University of Louisiana, co-director, Performance Studies Lab and Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow, Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III and Catherine Dessinges, Associate Professor, Information and Communication Sciences, Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III and Co-director, MARGE research laboratory.

On the event: "We are interested in the contemporary and francophone identity of New Orleans, which has become entrenched through the city's culturally diverse history. All of the social, linguistic and cultural signs, originating from the imagination and the practice of Frenchness in the city, constitute a socially established reality on which the tourism economy is amply based. It is this identity that we wished to capture, in the light of experimental and interdisciplinary research, starting with representations of the official voices of this Francophonie. This work gave rise to the production of an ephemeris (small fragmentary and subjective booklet) funded by French and American universities."

This discussion was originally scheduled to take place during our Francophone festival in March 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, so we are excited to welcome Ross and Catherine for this event.

Ross Louis: Professor of performance studies at Xavier University of Louisiana and co-founder / co-director of the Performance Studies Lab, Ross Louis works at the crossroads of archive, performance and the concept of the infra-ordinary. He is currently in residence at the MARGE laboratory at Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III where he co-leads a project on contemporary francophone identity appropriated by the inhabitants of New Orleans and the archive as a place of performative creation.

Ross LOUIS : Professeur en « performance studies » à Xavier University of Louisiana et co-fondateur/co-director du Performance Studies Lab, Ross Louis travaille à la croisée de l’archive, de la performance et du concept de l’infra-ordinaire. Il est actuellement en residence au laboratoire MARGE de l’Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III où il co-dirige un projet avec Catherine Dessinges sur l’identité francophone contemporaine s'approprié par les habitants de la Nouvelle-Orléans et l’archive comme lieu de création performative.  

Catherine Dessinges: Associate Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at the Université Lyon 3  and researcher at the MARGE interdisciplinary research center. Located in the field of the sociology of media and audience, part of her work focuses on the analysis of cultural minorities in New Orleans. She co-edited HBO's Treme and Post-Katrina Catharsis: The Mediated Rebirth of New Orleans at Lexington Books (2017 Reissue 2020) and currently conducts in partnership with Ross Louis and Xavier University of Louisiana, a research project funded by the University of Lyon (IDEX) entitled Mapping the daily: Francophone identities in New Orleans.

Catherine DESSINGES : Maîtresse de conférences en Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication à l’Université Lyon 3 et chercheuse au centre de recherche interdisciplinaire MARGE. Situés dans le champ de la sociologie des médias et des publics, une partie de ses travaux porte sur l’analyse des minorités culturelles de la Nouvelle-Orléans. Elle a ainsi co-édité l’ouvrage HBO's Treme and Post-Katrina Catharsis: The Mediated Rebirth of New Orleans aux Lexington Books (2017 Réedition 2020) et conduit actuellement en partenariat avec Ross Louis et Xavier University of Louisiana, un projet de recherche financé par l’Université de Lyon (IDEX) intitulé Mapping the quotidien : Francophone identities in New Orleans.

Dans le cadre de la Semaine de la Francophonie, notre troisième Rendez-vous de l'Alliance de l'année 2021 nous amènera à échanger avec Ross Louis, Professeur de la Performance Studies, Xavier University of Louisiana, Co-director, Performance Studies Lab et Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow, Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III et Catherine Dessinges,  Maîtresse de conférences, Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication, Université Jean Moulin, Lyon III et Co-directrice, laboratoire de recherche MARGE .

Résumé : « Nous nous intéressons à l’identité contemporaine et francisée de la Nouvelle-Orléans, laquelle s’est sédimentée à travers l’histoire culturellement diversifiée de la ville. L’ensemble des signes sociaux, linguistiques et culturels, procédant de l’imaginaire et de la pratique de la francité dans la ville constitue une réalité socialement établie sur laquelle s’appuie amplement l’économie du tourisme. C’est cette identité que nous avons souhaité saisir, à la lumière d’une recherche expérimentale et interdisciplinaire, en partant dans un premier temps des représentations des voix officielles de cette Francophonie. Ce travail a donné lieu à la réalisation d’une éphéméride (petit livret  fragmentaire et subjectif) financée par des universités françaises et américaines. »

Cette discussion devait initialement avoir lieu lors de notre festival francophone en mars 2020, mais a été annulé en raison de la pandémie COVID-19, nous sommes donc ravis d'accueillir Ross et Catherine pour cet événement.
