Discover the French of the Illinois Country

Join us for Le Français Illinois, a special workshop that invites participants to explore the unique variety of French once spoken in the Upper Louisiana Territory through the lens of oral tradition and storytelling.

Led by guest presenter Brian, this engaging session begins with a screening of his animated film "Chasse Galerite," an artistic retelling of the legendary folktale La Chasse-Galerie. The film features narration by Pete Boyer, one of the last native francophone speakers from Old Mines, Missouri.

Following the screening, the workshop will include a discussion on linguistic and cultural memory, as well as a reading of a second traditional tale from Old Mines, offering a deeper look into the storytelling traditions of French-speaking communities in the historic Illinois Country.

Why Attend?

  • Learn about a lesser-known regional dialect of French
  • Experience traditional folktales brought to life through animation and live reading
  • Reflect on the importance of oral history in language preservation
