Jalouse

7:00pm

France - Comedy, 2017
The most recent film by brothers Foenkinos, Karin Viard cleverly embodies Nathalie Pêcheux with class: an elegant literature teacher, mother of a future dancing "star" and socially brilliant woman. In short, everything in her life seems to be going smoothly. Despite the stability envied by many, Nathalie does not feel good at all, suddenly everything seems "different,” to her. Her daughter and the young female prof at her University become ideal excuses for her to unload a feeling that threatens to devour her: jealousy. Far from the condescending sentimentality that accompanies many comedies of late, Jalouse intrigues and teases the things we know for certain. We all feel (men and women) a bit like Nathalie, though admitting it is far from easy.

Corporate

7:00pm

France - Comedy, 2017
After the suicide of one of her staff, a demanding HR manager's life becomes intensely complicated, and she realizes the effect that her devotion to work has had on her employees in this smart, slow-simmering workplace thriller that wades in deep, chilly waters of moral corruption and compromise. Headed by the ever-interesting Céline Sallette whose professional sangfroid cracks in the wake of an employee’s suicide. The unfussy script steers clear of simple condemnation, sharply outlining both the rock and the hard place between which Emilie — like many a career woman in her position — finds herself, and the differing ways in which society perceives business-minded ruthlessness in men and women.

La vie de château

7:00pm

France - Comedy, 2017
In the vibrant African neighborhood of Château d’Eau in Paris, Charles is the smoothest of all the hustlers. His job: to fill the districts numerous hair salons with customers. Château is based on the real life practice that anyone familiar with Château d’Eau Métro station knows: the touting for business by groups of men who hang around the exit, hoping to bring customers to one of the area's many Afro-Caribbean hair salons. There are dodgy deals and inter-gang rivalries galore, but the film always retains a sweetness and charm. Winningly played by the largely unknown cast, Château is a small, yet very satisfying film which provides a nice snapshot of one of Paris' less-celebrated arrondissements (10th).
